Short answer. A battery warranty is two promises with a test and a set of conditions attached, and an insurance policy is what sits above it. Product term: BYD's Battery-Box Premium warranty runs ten years against defects in materials or workmanship; GoodWe's industrial BAT cabinet runs five years on electronics and enclosure, with the fire-suppression system covered for one year and the air-conditioning unit for two. Performance term: BYD promises 60% of usable energy at ten years or a model-specific minimum throughput (15.41 MWh for the 5.12 kWh HVS 5.1; 68.31 MWh for the 22.08 kWh HVM 22.1), whichever comes first; GoodWe promises 70% at ten years or a throughput of 3.5 MWh per kWh of usable capacity at ≤0.5C and 2.9 MWh above 0.5C up to 1.1C, and covers the cells only; Sungrow's residential warranty is 60% at ten years or a throughput (40.32 MWh for a 9.6 kWh unit). Conditions: BYD defines the capacity test (constant-current discharge–charge–discharge at 25–28 °C ambient) and excludes claims where Internet access to performance data is refused, with repair, replacement or partial refund at its discretion; GoodWe requires reports within a month (its exceptions list separately says two weeks), charging and discharging within −20 to 55 °C and a GoodWe inverter unless compatibility is confirmed, and covers a capacity equivalent to one full cycle a day; Sungrow likewise requires Internet access to performance data. Procurement baseline: Sandia's 2016 template asks for at least a five-year warranty on all BESS components, a stated life expectancy for the given discharge profile, and extended-warranty and uptime-guarantee line items. Guarantee layer: Tesla's 10-K describes performance guarantees under which it bears shortfall risk, including shortfalls from third-party components. Chinese insurance layer: the NFRA's 2024 opinion calls for storage insurance innovation across R&D, manufacturing and O&M, the Insurance Association of China issued electrochemical-storage risk assessment guidelines in December 2024, and PICC describes a 15-year quality-and-performance guarantee policy plus property all-risks, machinery breakdown and price-spread revenue cover. The Chinese technical anchors are NEA's 2024 performance and grid-interface tests and GB/T 36276-2023. This guide reads residential and commercial product warranties, a template RFP, an SEC filing, a regulator's opinion and two press releases; it quotes no utility-scale warranty table, Chinese policy wording or claim.

1. Warranty anatomy

Throughputmodel table (e.g., 15.41 MWh for 5.12 kWh; 68.31 MWh for 22.08 kWh)per kWh of usable capacity: ≥3.5 MWh at ≤0.5C; ≥2.9 MWh at >0.5C to ≤1.1C40.32 MWh for the 9.6 kWh SBR096
What the performance term coversthe productbattery cells only; other components under the product warrantythe battery
Accessories—fire suppression 1 year; air-conditioning 2 years—
Start datewarranty start date (see clause 1.1)earlier of first installation or 6 months after productionten years (120 months) from installation, and no more than 126 months from manufacture

CNWattHub arithmetic (on the tagged figures): BYD's 15.41 MWh over 5.12 kWh is about 3,010 full-capacity equivalents, and 68.31 MWh over 22.08 kWh about 3,094; GoodWe's 3.5 MWh per kWh is 3,500 equivalents at ≤0.5C and 2.9 MWh per kWh is 2,900 above 0.5C up to 1.1C; Sungrow's 40.32 MWh over 9.6 kWh is 4,200. Over ten years those are roughly 0.82–0.85, 0.96 and 0.79, and 1.15 equivalents a day — so a system cycled once a day reaches GoodWe's ≤0.5C throughput near the ten-year mark but BYD's earlier, and GoodWe's own precondition caps coverage at one full cycle a day. 'Whichever comes first' means the throughput limit, not the calendar, ends the performance warranty for a hard-cycled system; the product warranty's own term is a separate clause.

2. The conditions that decide a claim

ConditionBYDGoodWeSungrow
Capacity testconstant-current discharge to EODV, 10 min rest, CC/CV charge to full, 10 min rest, discharge; integral of current × voltage over time; 25–28 °C ambient—'standard capacity test conditions'
Data accessclaim excluded if Internet access to performance data is refused on request after a claim, or data manipulated—Internet access to performance data and logs required
Reporting—preconditions: failure reported within one month of appearance; exceptions list: failure not reported within two weeks is excluded — an internal inconsistency—
Operating envelopeoperated normally per BYD's manualcharge/discharge within −20 to 55 °C; recommended 10–30 °C; one full cycle a day covered—
Storage before installation—installed within 6 months of production; 30–50% SOC; cycle every 12 months—
System pairing—GoodWe inverter unless compatibility confirmed—
Remedyrepair, replace or partial refund at BYD's sole discretion; replacements of equal performance and reliability—warranty terminates when limit reached

CNWattHub reading: the defined capacity test is the clause that decides whether a 'degraded' battery is a warranty case, and BYD's version fixes method and ambient temperature — a test run at another temperature or by another method is not the contractual measurement. The data-access exclusions in two of three warranties make telemetry a condition of cover, which matters for a Chinese-built system exported to a site where connectivity is restricted. GoodWe's 'covers a capacity equivalent to one full cycle per day' precondition is a coverage limit written into a warranty, and a duty that cycles harder would need to be checked against it; the one-month/two-week reporting inconsistency in the same document is the kind of drafting defect a buyer should have resolved in writing before signing.

3. The procurement baseline

Sandia's 2016 guidance for municipalities includes template RFP language requiring the vendor to provide at minimum a five-year warranty for all BESS components with a separate cost breakdown for additional years; a warranty clause that the equipment and the completed project are fit for producing and storing electricity and free from defects for five years after acceptance, with the vendor to indicate life expectancy for the discharge profiles given in the RFP; and cost-proposal line items for an extended warranty beyond the five-year base, spare parts with a replacement schedule and an uptime guarantee.

CNWattHub reading: three things in that template are missing from the product warranties above — a life-expectancy statement tied to the buyer's own discharge profile, a priced extension and an uptime guarantee. Those are the items a project buyer adds in the contract, because the OEM's standard document does not carry them.

4. The guarantee layer above the warranty

Tesla's 2024 Form 10-K says it generally provides manufacturer's limited warranties with its energy storage products and offers extended limited warranties at purchase; that it may provide performance guarantees in energy generation and storage contracts that the system will meet or exceed minimum energy-generation or other performance requirements; that under these it generally bears the risk of shortfalls, including in some cases shortfalls caused by third-party components; and that these risks are exacerbated if such manufacturers cease operations or fail to honour their warranties.

CNWattHub reading: this is the clearest public statement found of the difference between a warranty (defects and retention, remedied by repair or replacement) and a performance guarantee (an output or performance level, with the integrator bearing the shortfall) — and of why the integrator's own credit and its component suppliers' survival become the buyer's risk.

5. The Chinese insurance layer

Document / statementContent
NFRA 金规〔2024〕5号, item (六)full-life-cycle cover for solar, wind, hydro and nuclear; explore insurance innovation for new-type storage, hydrogen, biomass, geothermal and ocean energy covering R&D, manufacturing and O&M risks; insurance as a risk solution for the new-type power system
Insurance Association of China, 2024-12-03released 抽水蓄能电站 and 电化学储能电站保险风险评估工作指引; prepared from December 2023 under 鼎和保险 (electrochemical) and 英大财险 (pumped storage) with PICC, CPIC, Ping An, Yongcheng and China Re and CEC support; full-life-cycle risk identification from construction to operation; scope, objects, framework, operation, reports, information-collection forms; said to mark the basic completion of the self-regulatory risk-assessment system for the main generation and storage segments
PICC (via 中国银行保险报, page dated 2024-08-15)first long-term quality-and-performance guarantee policy for storage systems — 15 years of product quality and performance guarantee for an exporter's equipment, covering quality and performance problems from raw-material defects, manufacturing defects and excessive material ageing; also storage property all-risks, machinery breakdown, peak–valley price-spread revenue-loss cover and what PICC calls the industry's first storage-station risk assessment standard

CNWattHub reading: the Chinese layer now has a regulator's mandate, an industry risk-assessment method and at least one insurer's product set, but none of the policy wordings or the 指引 texts was retrieved, so this guide can say what exists, not what it covers. The 15-year policy, as PICC's republished report describes it, guarantees product quality and performance against problems from raw-material defects, manufacturing defects and excessive material ageing; the report does not say whether the policy also responds if the manufacturer cannot or does not honour its warranty, so whether manufacturer credit risk is insured at all has to be checked in the specific policy wording. Nor should it be read as equivalent to the performance guarantees in Tesla's 10-K, under which the integrator itself bears the shortfall risk.

6. The Chinese technical anchors

NEA's 2024 notice requires storage to complete performance and grid-interface tests, equipment to meet national and industry standards, and O&M, operating, emergency and outage/maintenance plans to be filed periodically with dispatch; GB/T 36276-2023 电力储能用锂离子电池 (published 2023-12-28, effective 2024-07-01, CEC-administered) is the product standard for storage lithium-ion batteries (text not read).

CNWattHub reading: a warranty's capacity-test clause and the commissioning performance test are two different measurements of the same quantity; a buyer should check that the baseline recorded at commissioning is the one the warranty's method would produce, or the first claim becomes a dispute about the starting point.

7. An assessment sequence built from the sources

  1. Two terms, two clocks. Product years; performance years or throughput, whichever first.
  2. Throughput in cycles. Convert MWh to full-capacity equivalents and compare with the dispatch plan.
  3. Scope. Cells only, or the system; accessories' shorter terms.
  4. Test method. Defined procedure and temperature; match to commissioning baseline.
  5. Conditions. Data access, reporting window (and any inconsistency between sections), temperature, cycles per day, pairing.
  6. Remedy. Repair/replace/refund at whose discretion; termination on reaching the limit.
  7. Contract additions. Life expectancy for the profile; priced extension; uptime guarantee.
  8. Guarantee and credit. Who bears shortfall; supplier survival.
  9. Insurance. Mandate, risk-assessment method, available products — and the unread wordings.
